New Zealand is best known for its clean green image, however, with plastic waste continuing to pose a major threat to our environment, it is time for kiwi businesses to get proactive. Our parent company, Aramex Global has long been committed to investing and working towards reducing negative environmental impacts. This includes developing new ways to increase efficiency, lower energy consumption and material use, as well as managing our overall footprint.
In 2016, Aramex Global committed to reducing our carbon footprint by 20% by 2020. The key areas of investment were energy efficiency (including development of solar farms), water efficiency, protection of the environment and the improvement of natural resource management. By 2017, Aramex Global had already reached the goal of cutting carbon emissions by 20%. Given this result, we then agreed to an additional 20% decrease by 2020.
Aramex New Zealand (formerly Fastway Couriers), will be pursuing our own sustainability vision locally. With the green packaging industry burgeoning, we will be partnering with Better Packaging Co to develop more sustainable solutions within our business and for our customers.
Better Packaging Co is a New Zealand based company with a global presence. After years of working with couriers and witnessing the amount of plastic waste generated, these waste warriors took a stand and developed a sustainable packaging solution. They developed two compostable packaging ranges comPOST and OPACKS. Both ranges take into consideration the lifecycle impact of the product, from sustainably sourcing the material through to disposal.

In a dark and cool environment, these products have a predicted (at minimum) 9-month life span, they may last longer however from the 9-month timeframe, their strength may be compromised.
In a home compostable environment, the satchels have been certified to biodegrade within 180 days. Under commercial composting conditions, it would happen much faster, and as rubbish, the compostable process would still take place but it would happen more slowly. Having passed the worm toxicity test, these satchels can also decompose in worm farms.
